Stunning Stone Sculptures by Sam Bennett
Sam Bennett is an emerging artist in Torbay, who makes stunning sculptors from stone, driftwood and any other material he can find washed-up at local beaches and coves. His transient sculptures are born from a love of the dramatic Devon coastline. Meet Sam Bennett and see your local beach through new eyes.
From a young age, like many Bay locals, Sam went to the beach with his family; exploring the nooks of the coastline, balancing stones and making sand castles. He now creates things of true wonder by the sea; large-scale balanced objects and beautiful patterns that resonate the work of his hero, Andy Golesworthy.
Sam feels most at home on these beaches, surrounded by the expansive views of coastline and sea… the perfect place to detach from the modern world.
"It’s definitely escapism, it's a very calming and relaxing place to be in the Bay. When you’re down here, you’re inside your own head, you can think anything through, you can have any conversation and then you realise not everything is all that bad." - Sam Bennett.
His canvas is the natural landscape; Sam refers to the fact that it is the stones left behind that dictate what he's going to create and that no two days are ever the same, as the tide changes the possibilities of his work. Sam likes to keep his art in its native environment rather than putting it in a gallery or other space.
“I don't like the thought of putting it in a gallery or putting it somewhere where it's not meant to be. Like here, it looks bizarre, because you turn up, it should be here; however, it's made of stuff that's naturally here." - Sam Bennett
