As part of our Meet The Makers series, we spent time with Ourglass, the mesmerising glassmakers at Cockington Court who have been capturing people's imaginations for the past 23 years.

The three passionate founders, brother and sister Mark Tranter and Patricia Tranter-Edmonds and Lee James, formed Ourglass in 1995. Mark and Patricia both graduated in 3D Design in Glass, while Lee found his passion for glass by happy accident when he worked for the UK crystal glass industry. Together they found a base at Cockington Court in 1997, where they've been residents ever since.

While speaking to two of the three founders - Patricia Tranter-Edmonds and Lee James - we discovered there's more to Ourglass than you might think - with ethically and environmentally conscious materials at the heart of their work:

We recycle offcuts, overblows, factory breakages, and rejects from a company in North Devon called Dartington Crystal... we wash it, sieve it, dry it, shovel it in the furnace and we make the pieces you see if you visit our studio.
— Lee James, Ourglass Founder

Seeing the pieces taking shape is mesmerising. Their passion is infectious and their commitment to their craft, utterly fascinating. Patricia explained that she's been chasing a vision of the perfect curve and in the right colour for the past 20 years.

Glass is a very compelling medium I would say... it’s a lively organic material, so you interact with it, you’re not mastering it, you’re kind of dancing with it.
— Patricia Tranter-Edmonds, Ourglass Founder

The best thing about Ourglass is their working studio at Cockington Court. You can stand and watch these creations come to life for minutes or hours. It's also a rare opportunity to meet the makers; you can ask Patricia, Lee and Mark any question you like and even commission them to make a special gift or piece for your home. Well worth a visit and here's to the next 20 years of handmade crafts.
