Whether it's a gull or something rarer, the first animal you're likely to see outside your window will be some kind of bird and from an early age illustrator, artist and author - Mike Langman - became captivated by these wonderful creatures.

Merging his two passions of birdwatching and illustrations, Mike pursued a wonderful career where the two worlds collide. After leaving Torbay for a London art college, Mike landed his dream job with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) at their headquarters in Bedfordshire. It wasn't long before Mike left his mark and now his bird illustrations can be seen on nearly every RSPB reserve, his paintings are used as identification cards, also several large murals in information centres and hides as well as the RSPB website.

Eventually, it was time for a new chapter in Mike's life when he became a full-time bird illustrator and moved back to his beloved Torbay. Since then, Mike has published over 50 books and travelled around the world with his trusty sketchbook and pencil, which never leave his side.

As an artist, a bird illustrator and a birdwatcher, all I’ve got is a notepad and a pencil; that’s all... The notepad and pencil are the two most important things for me to carry around where ever I go in the world or where ever I go in Torbay it’s always with me.

Some artists never share their techniques or secrets tips, however, Mike spreads his passion through his work with local conservation charity, Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust, where he leads bird watching sessions and teaches bird sketching classes; we asked what advice would he give an upcoming bird illustrator?

The most important thing is to be dedicated to it and keep on going back. I tell people there’s no way in the world they can go out on the first session, in the first two hours they’re going to go away with a realistic drawing... you need to sit down there and be with the subject you’re drawing.
