In a time of cheap mass produced products, we find out how furniture can last a lifetime with local upholsterer Justin Roach of Gaff. Our Meet The Maker series is back again for another episode direct from Cockington Court, Torquay.

Before establishing Gaff back in 2013, Justin Roach studied fashion and shoe design where he mastered his skills from pattern cutting to leather design and sewing.

“Upholstery is a craft that literally challenges you everyday and changes everyday, there's so many chairs, sofas, and bits and pieces out there that are just so different. Every time I take on a job you can pretty much guarantee I haven’t done it before; therefore it keeps it fresh, interesting and your always learning new skills” - Justin Roach, Gaff.

Justin feels strongly about sourcing and using ethical and quality materials in his work. Not only do they add to the beautiful and durable nature of the pieces, they also evoke his inherent belief in good, sustainable design that can last a lifetime.

"Upholstery is sustainability in the sense that you're taking something, whether it be a year old and keeping it fresh; whether it's 200 years old, you are sustaining that piece of furniture" - Justin Roach, Gaff

You can watch Justin create these stunning pieces of furniture in his studio at Cockington Court. This open way of manufacturing furniture highlights just how comfortable and confident Justin is with his craft. It’s mesmerising to simply stand and see exactly what it takes to re-make a piece of furniture from the ground up.
