This month, Torbay duo - BKLYN. - released their self-titled debut album. We met up with the guys BEHIND THE MUSIC for a chat about self-producing an album in THEIR HOMETOWN OF Torquay, BEFORE attendING their album launch boat party where we got to hear new releaseS whiLST floating around the bay.

Josh Martin (lead vocalist and lead guitar) and Jack Bannocks (lead drummer) are Torbay through and through, having lived here their whole lives and maintaining their DIY attitude to music, recording it in their make-shift studio at their home in Torquay.

BKLYN. formed in 2014 and soon caught the attention of BBC Introducing, which lead to opportunities to play at Bestival and inclusion on the H&M in-store playlist in the US too.

The name BKLYN. comes from their of love Hip-Hop and pays homage to the founding fathers in Brooklyn, New York. Mixing this with their love for 80s pop and you have a sound that resembles something like The 1975 with a local lyrical twist.

“The theme of the album is being a young teenager growing up here... there are lyrics in those songs where I can geotag where it happened in Torbay.”
— Josh Martin, lead vocalist & guitar, BLKYN.

The self-titled album tells the story of love and heartbreak with singles like 'Shy' and 'Pick Up The Phone', but Jack's favourite track from the album is 'Money' - a song that brings to life the struggle of making the album independently - the bittersweet reward of working without a record label.

“I think recording the album itself, having full control over it, means the end product is exactly how you feel it should be. You shouldn’t wait around for labels, anyone now can get a laptop and download some samples and then just start doing it themselves... and I encourage people to do that.”
— Jack Bannocks, Drummer, BKLYN.

As the pair miraculously stayed balanced on the boat as they played at their album launch, we heard a taster for the new album. As we bobbed past the glorious backdrop of the Paignton and Brixham coastline, the colourful music was a perfect anthem of love, heartbreak and life in the Bay.

BKLYN.'s self-titled album is 13 tracks and runs for 46-minutes. Our favourite tracks include: '23:23', 'NYC' and 'Pick Up The Phone'. Stream the album from Spotify and Apple Music now!! You can also follow the guys on Facebook:
