Laugh more with Torquay Comedy Club
While we’ve been fortunate enough to see major comedians like Jimmy Carr, Russell Brand and Tim Vine perform at the theatres in Torbay, a regular comedy club has been missing in the bay… cue Ben Milden, the founder of Torquay Comedy Club.

Traditionally, Torbay has always been a top destination for the touring comedians with major venues like The Princess Theatre, Palace Theatre Paignton and Babbacombe Theatre, filling their stages with some of today’s biggest stars.
Torquay’s Ben Milden felt one thing was missing; an immersive, up-close and personal comedy club. In May 2018 Ben started Torquay Comedy Club at the Riviera Hotel - formally known as the Rainbow hotel - growing audiences and attracting acts from far and wide.
“I thought there was a lack of comedy, in Torquay in particular, so instead of moving somewhere where my passion was, I want to bring my passion to where I am. I don't want to sacrifice the area that I live in for my passion… why not bring my passion to a beautiful part of the world” - Ben Milden, Founder of Torquay Comedy Club.
Ben’s approach is to strip back the glitz and glamour and focus on the connection between the audience and the comedians. Having experienced this format and atmosphere elsewhere in the country, he wanted this same experience at his shows.
“What I wanted was the classic comedy club feel that I've experienced from going around the country… you can have a bit more banter with the comedian, it's a bit more one-on-one than being one of 600 odd in a theatre where you can get lost in the back. I feel particularly at comedy clubs you get more from the comedian back and the comedian gets more back from you, and the better time the comedian's have , the better time the audience is, the better the show everyone gets, and that's something that I thought at the time was lacking in Torquay.” - Ben Milden, Founder of Torquay Comedy Club.
Torbay has comedic heritage, with renowned comedian Peter Cook being the areas most standout icon. Ben’s learning that Torbay is also known as a place for emerging comics to test and hone their skills, and this is what he’d like to focus more on again in the Bay:
“There's a rich culture of comedy within Torquay, which I have learned as I've gone along speaking to comedians such as Jon Richardson I found out that he sharpened his teeth in Torquay and that there has been a big comedy scene from some of the comedians that we now know and love from TV a lot of them have started off doing a lot of gigs and their earlier days in Torquay” - Ben Milden, Founder of Torquay Comedy Club.
Another reason Ben made Torquay Comedy Club was to create a platform for other local comedians. The shows consist of a touring and relatively well-known comedian as the headliner, with the other three slots made up of Devon and Somerset-based performers; for example they’ve had Stuart Goldsmith, Gareth Richard, Suzy Bennett, Louis Burgess. This approach has resulted in a hot bed of talent, sell-out shows and a loyal audience who just keep on booking.
“We've got quite a few regulars; they came to the first ever show and they've been every time since and they keep coming, and it's great to have them back. It's really great to have people that love it, so they want to come to every one.” - Ben Milden, Founder of Torquay Comedy Club.
So, should you go?!? Torquay Comedy Club is well worth a visit. We’ve been twice now and seriously loved and laughed every moment. We can totally see why tickets often sell out and can’t wait see Ben’s plans for the future.
