Life saving barber
TOM CHAPMAN IS A BARBER, EDUCATOR AND AUTHOR WITH A BIG MISSION TO RAISE AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND PREVENT SUICIDE. WE SPOKE TO BRIXHAM BASED TOM ABOUT HIS CREATIVE LIFE IN TORBAY AND WORK AS THE FOUNDER OF THE LIONS BARBER COLLECTIVE.
Torbay suffers from the highest rate of male suicide in the South West, and nationally, suicide is now the biggest killer of young people - yes more than traffic accidents, drugs or cancer. For Tom, the loss of a good friend from suicide awoke a purpose to stand up and do something about this tragedy.
Tom and The Lions Barber Collective believe that the barbershop is a great, safe place for men to talk. That barbers across the world have the kind of relationships with men that mean they can recognise the signs and signpost men to counsellors at the Samaritans, Mind and Papyrus.
The initiative has sparked widespread media interest being featured on major news outlets including the BBC, Channel 4, FOX News, Metro, Independent, The Telegraph and The Huffington Post. The Lions Barber Collective is using this global platform to spread the word and develop BarberTalk - a course designed for barbers on suicide intervention and mental health awareness. This is just the beginning of a life-affirming movement started right here in Torbay with the power to change the world. Inspiring stuff indeed.
