EDITORS’ PICK | Head to The Summer Series for Soulful Music at Sunset
Get together with friends for a chilled out series of gigs set against the stunning views of the Bay and beyond. We met local trio - Jack Bowden, Mark Mason and Nick Watson - to find out more about these laid back events orchestrated at sunset.
“The Summer Series came on the back of there not being anywhere for the 20-30-year-olds to go to just kind of listen to good music in a laid-back atmosphere and just make it all about the conversation, not about the line-up at all. Just giving everyone a good time, but more importantly in venues where there isn't usually events… like really cool creative spaces.
We tend to keep it kind of like Funk, House, soulful kind of music - we just go with the flow, to be honest, we see what they like and we'll give them what they want.
Myself, Mark and Jack, we've been mates a long time now, 10 or 15 years. We've all DJ'd at a lot of events, we've put on events in and around the area, beyond the area, and we all bring our own set of skills and the three of us combined just works perfectly.” - Nick Watson, co-founder The Summer Series.
“We don't put too much pressure on ourselves, we don't charge for tickets. By putting it on in venues that don't usually host this kind of thing it means we have total creative freedom and we can listen to the feedback of the crowd and just constantly evolve.
We've done an event at Fishcombe Cove Cafe already… Our next event is on the 6th of July and that's at the beautiful WeSup, just off Torquay Marina car park. And then we’ve got a closing party towards the end of August on bank holiday Sunday… at Twenty1 and then we've also been asked to do Bayview Festival at Torre Abbey on the Friday. We will be hosting a stage over there at the Spanish Barn, so lots of little things going on.” - Nick Watson, co-founder The Summer Series.
“… I mean too many people have a lot of apathy in Torbay and too many people say everyone's on spice… everyone just goes out drinking all the time, but no that's not true, there's so much creativity here. There's so many cool people doing great things. People that move up to London and come back because they realise like the Bay is absolutely awesome... There's just so much energy here and it's a beautiful area and like I'm so happy to live here, it just inspires me every day.” - Nick Watson, co-founder The Summer Series.
The Summer Series has four upcoming gigs: 6 July at WeSup, Torquay Marina. 3 August at The Mussel Shoal, Porthleven harbour head. 25 August at Twenty1 garden bar, Torquay Harbour, and a stage takeover at Bayview Festival, Torre Abbey on 27-28 September.
