Chrystine Jones is a South Devon artist who works with air, fire, and water to create dream-like abstract patinas in pewter. Having recently been selected as a Geopark Ambassador Artist, we met with Chrystine at her Cockington Court studio to discuss being naturally inspired by a life lived on the English Riviera.

We did a tour of the coastline with this geologist. She told me about things I had no idea, like the upside-down mountain and we actually stood on it. You can see all the fossils - and it's just fantastic - and the importance of the name, the Devonian period, I had no idea about any of this. It just excited me so much I thought this is massive, this is so important.

In the face of adversity - following a heart bypass - Chrystine took healing from the UNESCO Global Geopark on her doorstep. Whilst walking along the sheltered beaches and endless coastline, Chrystine aided her recovery by capturing the inspiration around her via photography, sketches and notes. Once home, she looked over her photos and that’s when her creativity was really ignited:

I work with metal and I've actually developed a method of creating colour in pewter, which is quite unique. It's really more like paintings… I've got the blue for the sea and the gold of the sun coming down. I've got the ripples and the dappled water and the bubbles coming up and when I did this, I thought wow that's fantastic... I just love what I do.

Chrystine is now where she's always wanted to be… in the Sea Change studios at Cockington Court in Torquay. Sharing the space with two other artists, she now has a space to share her story and art with the world.

What I like about Cockington Court is that you've got this network of artists all working together. I think that as an artist you'll grow because you've got more inspiration by the people you surround yourself with. This is where I was aiming to get, so I'm here, this is going to be really good.
