Singer inspired mass sewing event at Oldway Mansion
Watch this. Another glimpse into the world of Eyeview (extra)ordinary is here. In this second video feature, we hear from Amy Pitt, the lead artist behind Fabric of Home, a mass sewing event to be held on the lawns of Singer’s former home, Oldway Mansion in Paignton.
"At (extra)ordinary I will be leading a project which is a large-scale sewing project. The fact that Singer lived here at Oldway Mansion and that the Singer sewing machine company were sewing machines for home and leisure... it made making and sewing a much more accessible thing and that was able to be in people's houses.
Where all my thoughts came from was starting to think about what do people make at home... where is home... I know the lines from which we'll be starting to make something from, but everybody will make something in a very different way and actually I'm really open to that being the process of the project.
People will make a small element to contribute to a larger installation that will be outside on the lawns at Oldway Mansion... a growing map that will be evolving. Being a part of something, being a part of a collective thing that is made... you can't always predict what's going to happen, it's like going on this journey together."
