Living In Devon Pushed Rich Cottell's Music Career Further
Rich Cottell sells out venues across the UK, and still calls Torbay his home. We wanted to hear his story on how living in Devon furthered his music career and found out more about his album ‘More Than Just A Geek’.
To locals who enjoy watching live music and eating pizza in Rock Garden, you’ve likely had a sing-a-long with Rich Cottell, but what you probably didn’t know about his dedicated fan base across the country. Rich first picked up a guitar after watching the classic Jack Black film, School of Rock. After falling in love with the band Greenday, Rich started to write and perform his own music where he sonically fell into the style of feel-good, fun pop, and meaningful songwriting.
Speaking to Rich you can instantly tell how much he loves living in Torbay and how significant it was for him when it came to producing his album More Than Just A Geek. He went on to explain that without the gigs in Devon, he wouldn’t have been able to fund his dream album.
“I was doing five shows a week in Devon and then going up and doing two days recording in Guildford because it was a producer with lots of contacts.” - Rich Cottell, Musician.
Despite living in Devon, Rich’s fanbase stretches across the UK thanks to an ‘Anti Bullying’ 12 month school tour, where he performed and spoke at 2 schools a day, reaching in excess of 10,000 students a week. As a result Rich has sold out venues across the country with his sold out show at Newcastle’s O2 Academy being one of his favourite shows yet.
“I think the O2 Newcastle was my favourite ever show just because the Jordi's are the best crowd. Little things I remember like my partner was pregnant at the time so my little boy was at my first O2 show, technically.” - Rich Cottell, Musician.
Rich is a very positive and inspirational person to talk, and what inspires him is the natural beauty here in Devon.
“To be a creative person you need to see new things every day, you need to see fresh things. When I stay in places in cities I was feeling so drained after a day and I went ‘I'm not getting the views that I'm used to in Devon’, where I can just drive to somewhere, see stuff, feel inspired. Devon's got that for any young person, although it can feel cut off sometimes, it's a really easy place to feel inspired.” - Rich Cottell, Musician.
