Lunch with Michael Grandage CBE and Michelin star chef Simon Hulstone
The Elephant, Torquay’s Michelin starred restaurant, has announced a series of 'Saturday lunch with…' where you can sit down to enjoy an incredible 3-course meal with a renowned person from the arts world. It will launch on Saturday 18 May with multi award-winning Theatre Director and Producer Michael Grandage, who has most recently directed Aidan Turner in The Lieutenant of Inishmore in the West End. Ahead of the event, we spoke to both Michael and Simon to find out more.
"The idea came around as we have been doing guest chef events for almost three years now and I wanted to bring a new feel to our events. I thought about other ideas before approaching the ‘arts‘ as the final choice, as I thought we could bring in a new demographic of guest and it was something I hoped people would find appealing. The event is all about Michael and the food is a compliment to him being here, we wanted to bring the best clientele in the area in for lunch and give them an opportunity to share a room with some of the UK’s finest directors, artists, actors etc." - Simon Hulstone, Chef-owner of The Elephant.
With his childhood connection to Torquay, and with a love for The Elephant, it didn't take much to convince Michael to take part: "I came to the area quite a lot as a child - my parents used to bring us to the Model Village - and I came to The Elephant last year and loved it. I like the idea of the industry cross over. I think Simon Hulstone has hit on a great way of sharing audiences with this series of talks." - Michael Grandage CBE, Theatre Director and Producer.
With the Elephant’s already prestigious reputation comes expectations of what audiences can expect from their lunch - so what does Simon have lined up?
"Every event will be different but we, of course, are here to show off too and we will be using the best seasonal produce to give the guests a fantastic lunch prior to each of the talks." - Simon Hulstone, Chef-owner of The Elephant.
And while it's important to keep the customers excited, Michael is definitely for one course in particular...
"Dessert. I was brought up in a sweet shop!" - - Michael Grandage CBE, Theatre Director and Producer.
Whilst bookings to this event are going fast, Simon explains this is the first of many events with people from the arts, but for now, he's keeping his cards close to his chest.
"Michael is our first and to be honest I was really worried about how we continue after having such an esteemed guest first. I needn’t had worried - Michael has given us the opportunity to approach other guests as they have been impressed that Michael has come down to do this. I must say Michael really is a coup for us. Our next guest is a brilliant actor and a phenomenal director and after that, we have one of the country’s best portrait artists. We are really excited about all three. If this all works out and the guests want more we have a few more lined up after that."
We're really excited for Saturday Lunch with Michael Grandage. These events join our two most favourite things together in one hit… great art and great food! Hurrah for The Elephant!
"I love to hear other people talking about their jobs. I always pick up something, - an idea, a philosophy or a way of working that can just inform my own job. So I hope people will enjoy hearing a little bit about the way we work in the theatre." - Michael Grandage CBE, Theatre Director and Producer.
